Beginning with the total fleet of 5 aircrafts in 1956, Vietnam Airlines has been a lot of changes until now. It was originally known as Vietnam Civil Aviation, and began flying as an independent airline soon after nationalizing Gia Lam Airport. More than fifty years, Vietnam Airline has been many changes, and each change, Vietnam Airline has developed, expanded and improved its own service to become an international standard airline.
In 1976, it renamed as the Civil Aviation General Department in Vietnam. At that same year, it began all operations for 21,000 passengers, including 7,000 on the international flights and 3,000 tons of cargo.
In 1993 it is renamed as Vietnam Airlines. In 1995 Vietnam Airlines Corporation was formed by Vietnam’s Prime Minister. The functions and tasks of our corporation covers the following aspects including partnerships, services, airline passengers transport and cargo transport both domestically and internationally in accordance with the State’s civil aviation development, and develop projects, investment, construction, securing fund, leasing and buying of aircraft, equipment maintenance, importing and exporting of materials, spare parts and raw materials needed for the business of Vietnam Airlines.
In the future, Vietnam Airlines will become a strong economic group that will contribute a lot in task of industrialization and modernization and basing on air transportation, it will diversify its activities, modernize rapidly, and acquire new techniques and improve its own to become a modern and prestige airline that express the national identity. And Vietnam Airline will be a leader in the region in terms of service quality and efficiency of business.
Vietnam Airlines have worked hard to increase the network of flights in the last 5 years and will continue to expand by adding more and more domestic and international flights. In current time, Vietnam Airlines operate to 38 destinations around the world, in Europe, Asia, Australia and Far East as well as fly to 18 domestic destinations.
In 2006, nearly 6.8 million passengers chose to fly with Vietnam Airlines. Hence, about 3.1 million passengers were on international flights and 3.7 million passengers were on domestic flights and reached more than 1 billion USD revenue. In the same year, Vietnam Airline transported 106 000 tons of cargo.

26/11/2011: Clients of Vietnam Airline is free for luggage allowance of 13 Airline Agents The new policy of preferential baggage allowance will help members of Vietnam Airlines Golden Lotus get free luggage allowance on all flights of 13 partner companies of Vietnam Airlines in the SkyTeam.
Starting from 01 September 2011, 14 airlines agents of the SkyTeam (including Vietnam Airlines) will apply preferential policies on free baggage allowance for passengers with Titan and Gold Titanium and Elite Plus of Vietnam Airlines
This new policy will help passengers simplify procedures by applying the same standard free baggage allowance , regardless of the passengers on the airline members, participate in which frequent programs and how to use class of services.
This change is particularly advantageous for the passenger using flight schedule of SkyTeam members' services . In the previous time, all agents only apply preferential policies on free baggage allowance for frequent members of Elite and Etite Plus class , does not apply for other combined flights.
In particular, the new policy of SkyTeam provisions also adds for members of the Class Elite and Elite Plus ( besides the standard of free baggage allowance for passengers) will be allowed to add 10 kg to Elite members and 20 kg for Elite Plus class.
For members of Vietnam Airlines Golden Lotus, the new policy will help customers enjoy preferential baggage allowance on all flights of 13 partner companies of Vietnam Airlines in the SkyTeam. When passengers are on flights of Vietnam Airlines (with VN flight number), the member is entitled to this standard of preferential luggage including 25kg extra baggage allowance for Platinum members, 15 kg for Gold members and 10 kg for Titanium members. SkyTeam is the global airline alliance which provides passengers with the fleet of wide flights, the high frequency of flights and safety. Passengers can add points and rewards from the regular customers program on all flights of SkyTeam.
Members of SkyTeam serve passengers with over 465 airport lounges all over the world, and fourteen members of the Alliance including Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air France, Alitalia, China Eastern, China Southern, Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Kenya Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air, TAROM and Vietnam Airlines. SkyTeam serves 474 million passengers with over 14,000 daily flights to 916 destinations in 169 countries.
The storm grounds many flights: Not only will about ten flights be canceled but many others in the routes between the Central Region and Tay Nguyen also will be delayed or changed tomorrow (September 27th) due to the 4th storm. Before that, about ten flights were also canceled and delayed on September 26th on the 8 routes to Buon Ma Thuot, Hue, Vinh, and Dong Hoi.
On September 27th, the eight flights planning to be canceled are VN1370/ 1371, VN1372/ 1373 on the routes Ho Chi Minh city - Hue - Ho Chi Minh city, VN1541/ 1540 on the routes Hanoi - Hue - Hanoi, and VN1591/ 1590 on the routes Hanoi - Dong Hoi - Hanoi.
The four flights including VN1262/ 1263 on the routes Ho Chi Minh city - Vinh - Ho Chi Minh city and VN1400/ VN1401 on the routes Ho Chi Minh city - Dong Hoi - Ho Chi Minh city will be delayed for up to 10 and 4 hours, respectively.
The representative of Vietnam Airlines claims that the carrier will order the compensation for delayed cancelation as well as arrange regular flights for the passengers affected in the following days.
14/8/2011: Vietnam Airline increases 15 days for promotional tickets
Vietnam Airlines will increase time to book air tickets about 15 days (from 15 to 31 August) with a special discount for 26 international destinations and some domestic routes.
The program applies to all routes from 15 September to 15 December and the period from 1 March 2012 to 31 May 2012 (Apart from high season and holidays) when booking and paying directly online on http://www.vietnamairlines.com
In particular,the roundtrip international ticket to Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Yangon, Guangzhou, Kunming only has price from 1,215,400 VND to 1,833,400 VND; to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Luang prabang, Vientiane, Beijing , Shanghai, Hong Kong with price from 2,451,400 VND; to Taipei, Kaohsiung with price from 4,099,400 VND and to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukoda, Seoul, Pusan with the price from 6,159,400 VND; to Paris, Frankfurt, Moscow, Sydney , Melbourne with price from 10,279,400 VND.
Price of the domestic flights (one way) between Hanoi / Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang has only 555,000 VND and Price between Hanoi / Hai Phong / Vinh and Ho Chi Minh City has only 999,000 VND.
